Support SB1315 for mental health reform in the criminal justice system

We need you to contact your Delegate and urge them to vote YES on Senate Bill 1315 Criminal proceedings; consideration of mental condition & intellectual & developmental disabilities in their upcoming meeting.

SB1315 would permit the admission of evidence concerning a defendant’s mental condition at the time of an alleged offense, if evidence tends to show the defendant did or did not have the specific mental state required for the offense charged and is otherwise admissible pursuant to the general rules of evidence. Legislation such as this will provide further nuance towards defendants that may have mental health conditions.

As mental health has received more attention in recent years, it must be reflected in Virginia’s legislation, especially regarding criminal proceedings, which is why we support this important legislation.
